Gas Safety

Gas safety forms a crucial part in overall safety at home. Gas related accidents are very common. Some of the common gas problems are gas leaks, explosions, fire, and carbon monoxide poisoning. However, regular gas safety checks will prevent these accidents from occurring in your home.

MCS Heating Services are highly qualified in carrying out gas safety checks in your home. Our engineers do a tightness test and a visual inspection of the gas pipework and regulators. They also check the appliances for any faults or malfunctioning. Therefore, they can determine if there is any gas leak and whether the appliances are in a good working condition.

How to improve gas safety in your home

Hire registered engineers

Ensure that only registered engineers install, repair and service your gas boiler, central heating system, radiators, and cookers. We are Gas Safe Registered engineers. All our engineers have the Gas Safe Register ID that has their registration number and list of the tasks they are competent to do.

Regularly check your appliances

Check for any warning signs that your appliances might not be working properly. Yellow flames in place of blue one and excessive condensation and stains around your gas appliances are common warning signs.

We carry out an annual test to your gas appliances to detect if there are any gas leaks. If we detect any gas leaks, we repair the appliance to ensure that it is safe to use. Regular servicing and maintenance guarantee you safety in your home.

Install a carbon monoxide alarm near your gas appliance

Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas. Some of the most common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, nausea, breathlessness, dizziness, collapse, loss of consciousness and in severe cases brain damage and death.

Therefore, it is important to install an audible carbon monoxide detector near all your gas appliances. This alarm will detect carbon monoxide leakage and alert you before it is too late.

Use your appliances only for their intended purposes

Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on the usage of the gas appliance and how regularly it needs to be serviced. For instance, never use a gas cooker as your room heater. Also, ensure that the air vents and chimneys are not blocked.

What to do if you suspect that there is a gas leak in your home:

 – Turn off all your gas supplies and all the gas appliances that were on

– Extinguish all flames and do not light any flames or open fires

– Open all the windows and doors to ventilate your house

– Call a registered engineer to check your appliances
